Faculty Course Release with External Funding

Faculty may use external funding for course release. The number of released credit hours is determined by the Workload Guidelines. It also must meet grant terms and availability of funds.

Externally-funded credit hour (course) release must be discussed with the department chair or school director during the workload planning meeting before submitting the course release form.

Externally-funded course buyouts require approval from the department chair or school director, the dean, and the provost.

If the credit hour (course) release is approved, please contact the Grant Operations Coordinator below who works with your college to complete the form:

The form will be routed through Adobe for signatures from the faculty member, department chair or school director, dean, and provost.

For purposes of calculating course buy-outs in grant proposals, the standard workload of a research-active faculty member is 30 credit hours a year. The University鈥檚 standard buy-out formula for teaching is as follows: each teaching credit is assessed at 1/30th of the faculty member鈥檚 annual academic year salary plus fringe benefits. Thus, a 3-credit course will be assessed at 3/30th of annual salary + fringe benefits.
