Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is the administrative and decision-making body having responsibility for review and approval of research involving recombinant or synthetic DNA.  Before any research involving recombinant or synthetic DNA can be initiated it must have received IBC review and approval.  Please see the forms below to complete the IBC application, submit completed applications to biosafetycommittee@csuohio.edu.  You may also review the requirements for Biosafety level 1 and 2 labs below.

糖心视频 IBC Submission and Review Process

Experiments covered by Sections III-A through III-E of the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (The NIH Guidelines) must be submitted to the 糖心视频 Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for review.

The 糖心视频 IBC meets on an 鈥渁s needed鈥 basis. When the IBC receives an application for review, a multi-step review process begins.

  • Prereview: The IBC chair reviews received applications to ensure that they have been properly completed. If the chair identifies potential issues, the application is returned to the PI for revisions. If no issues are identified, an IBC meeting is scheduled at the earliest time when quorum can be met.
  • Review: The application is assigned to a primary reviewer, who will lead a discussion of the proposed research, potential risks, and risk mitigation measures during the IBC meeting. Following the discussion, the committee votes to approve or deny the application or recommend resubmission after revision.
  • Notification of outcome: Following each IBC meeting, a memo will be sent to the PI informing them of the outcome. If the application was approved, the memo will include the date of approval, the risk group and biosafety level set by the committee, the date on which the approval expires, and any additional requirements. IBC decisions are shared with the public in the IBC meeting minutes, which are posted following their approval at the next IBC meeting.
